23.- Ruth Ellis has occupied as special place in the history of crime. She was found guilty of murdering her boyfriend in London in 1955, but her family have always believed that her conviction was unfair. They have repeatedly tried to prove that she was not guilty of murder.
In 1955, Ellis was suffering from depression. First of all, just days before the crime, her boyfriend attacked her. After that, Ellis shot her boyfriend outside a pub. Then the police arrested her. Next, she went on trial for murder. But according to British law at that time, the jury could not consider her boyfriend’s actions as provocation. Later, because the jury couldn’t consider that he had provoked her, they gave a verdict of murder. At that time, the penalty for murder was death, not prison. Finally, three weeks and three days later, Ellis was executed.
Since Ellis’s execution, the goverment has changed the law. Juries can now consider provocation. However, the government still insists that Ellis was properly convicted of murder.
24.- First of all, two different murders occurred in a small town in England in 1983 and 1986. Then Police arrested a main suspect. The main, a local 17-year-old boy, said he was innocent. After that, the police collected blood samples from local people. This man was sent yo prision for life in 1988. Dr jeffreys compared the results of the test to DNA evidence from the crime scene. He found that the main suspect was innocent. Next this was the first time in the world that a suspect had been proved innocent of murder by DNA testing. Later the police called DNA expert Dr alec jeffreys, who tested the blood samples. Finally, further DNA tests proved that another man was guilty of the murders.
